No Change Needed!

When I was a teenager, the one thing I wanted more than anything was curly hair. God had graced me with incredibly straight hair and, while I didn’t hate it, curls just somehow seemed more appealing! Of course, growing up in the 80s, I had the perfect solution and yes, I jumped on that bandwagon and got a perm!! The thing was, the perm did not gift me with the flowing curls I longed for and after sporting my new look for several months, I realized it was time for them to be gone and chopped them all off!!

Now that I’m older, my hair has decided that it no longer wants to remain straight and those curls I longed for as a teen adorn my head. You’d think I’d be ecstatic …. And yet, there are days I miss those long, flat locks that didn’t have to endure the high heat of a flat iron or grow exponentionally in the Florida humidity!

That’s often the thing about life; we want the very thing we don’t have, thinking that our lives will somehow be better ‘if’ that one change were to occur. AND, the reality is that it doesn’t really matter because straight, curly, blonde, or grey, my hair is not the thing that defines me!

What is it, when we look at our reflection staring back at us, makes us wish that it was different? And when did we stop looking at ourselves through the eyes of our younger selves and instead, treat her no better than a bully would? The truth is we are all unique in our own way and, instead of dreaming of the things we want to change, maybe we just need to embrace who we are and celebrate every ounce of our being!!

So why not start today? As you look at yourself in the mirror, remind the image staring back at you just how incredible they are!!! Tell her of the beauty you see glistening in her eyes, the brightness that radiates from her smile, and, most of all, remind her that the essence of who she truly is is the very reason for her being.

Go seize this day and let your light SHINE bright upon all those you meet today!! YOU are amazing exactly the way you are!
